Steve Peters’ model gives athletes a memorable language for rapid emotion, deliberate choice and learned programmes. Its value lies in structured reflection—not in treating the metaphor as a literal map of the brain.

A FUNCTIONAL METAPHOR

Three labels.
One interacting mind.

The model separates mental activity into memorable functional characters so that a person can notice an unwanted reaction, understand its likely source and choose a response.

The labels are not diagnoses and should not be used to describe emotion as inherently bad. Emotions may provide essential information and energy. The practical question is whether the resulting behaviour is proportionate, useful and consistent with the athlete’s values.

In the model, the systems influence one another. The task is not to eliminate the Chimp, silence emotion or make the Human “win” every moment; it is to manage the whole system more skilfully.

CFEELINGS & IMPRESSIONS

Chimp

Represents rapid, emotionally driven reactions that can arise without deliberate permission. It is especially sensitive to threat, status, belonging, reward and uncertainty.

HFACTS, VALUES & PERSPECTIVE

Human

Represents deliberate thinking: checking evidence, considering consequences, solving problems and choosing behaviour consistent with longer-term values and goals.

CPUSTORED PROGRAMMES

Computer

Represents memories, beliefs, learned rules and habits consulted by both systems. Well-rehearsed programmes can guide behaviour quickly and automatically.

SPEED, POWER & CONTROL

Why knowing is not always enough.

Under pressure, a rapid emotional response may be active before a deliberate explanation is available. Peters uses a “five times stronger” description to communicate this felt imbalance. That figure is a teaching metaphor, not a measured biological ratio.

When time and regulation permit, facts, values and consequences guide action.

Real information processing is recursive and distributed. This sequence is a reflective teaching device, not a claim that neural activity always follows four clean, separate steps.

What has been

The Computer explains why athletes may repeat a response even when they consciously know a better option. Repetition, emotional learning and social messages can make a programme increasingly automatic.

Autopilot

A constructive belief or behaviour that operates automatically and supports the athlete.

02CHANGEABLE

Gremlin

An unhelpful learned belief or habit that can be identified, challenged and replaced through repeated corrective experience.

03DEEPLY ROOTED

Goblin

Peters’ term for an entrenched belief that may be difficult to alter and may require careful, sustained work rather than a quick slogan.

Conceptual resemblance

Dual-process theories also distinguish fast, automatic processing from slower, working-memory-dependent processing. This resemblance provides context, but it does not validate every element of the Chimp Model.

Integrated networks

Contemporary affective neuroscience emphasises dynamic interaction among emotion, cognition, motivation and action—not isolated emotional and rational brains operating independently.

The nurse trial supports evaluation of a multi-session programme for occupational wellbeing in that context. It does not establish the model’s proposed neural mechanisms or demonstrate improved sport performance. Elite-athlete testimonials are evidence of use, not proof of causal effectiveness.

Formulate the response.
Do not label the athlete.

Apply the model to a specific moment and behaviour. “The athlete is a Chimp” is inaccurate and stigmatising; “a rapid Chimp response may be active in this situation” preserves the model’s intended distinction.

Missing is possible; the next routine remains available.
Programme
Reset feet, locate target, exhale, “set—see—follow.”

APPLIED TOOL

Use the PAUSE routine.

The routine converts the model from a label into a repeatable self-regulation process. Practise it outside competition before expecting reliable use under pressure.

FICTIONAL CARIBBEAN TEACHING CASE

Start with the sporting situation.

A fictional Trinidad track cyclist feels angry after being boxed in and immediately blames a teammate. Later, the cyclist uses ‘Chimp, Human and Computer’ language to discuss the reaction. The coach wants this conversation to support responsibility without labelling the athlete as a bad person.

Your learning goal: Use a teaching metaphor carefully and distinguish its practical language from claims about brain structures or diagnosis.

Evidence, with context

The Chimp Model is a named framework developed by Steve Peters. Neuroscience describes interacting emotion and cognition processes, rather than three separate characters controlling the brain. A memorable explanation is not, by itself, evidence of a specific biological mechanism.

Use the model as optional reflective language. It is not a diagnostic tool, an excuse for harmful behaviour or proof that emotion is always irrational.
