SPORT PSYCHOLOGY · DR. MARLON MELVILLE

Find a cue for your next action

Examine what a phrase means to the athlete, select a useful function and test a believable cue.

Use a fictional or non-identifying example. This worksheet supports learning; it is not a psychological assessment. Write on a printed copy or choose “Return” to build a downloadable plan online.

1. Describe the moment

Choose one fictional or non-identifying example: after a missed shot, before a start or between deliveries.

2. Identify the words and their meaning

What is said internally or aloud? What does the athlete understand it to mean? What happens next?

3. Write a short, believable cue

State its job: direct attention, guide a movement, support effort or organise a response. Adapt it to the athlete.

4. Plan a training check

When will the cue be used? Record the athlete's experience, the target behaviour and whether the cue needs changing.
