Respond to a concern without diagnosing
Practise a supportive conversation and an appropriate route to qualified help using a fictional case.
Use a fictional or non-identifying example. This worksheet supports learning; it is not a psychological assessment. Write on a printed copy or choose “Return” to build a downloadable plan online.
1. Separate observations from labels
Use only the fictional facts. Identify what is known and what you cannot conclude.
2. Write a supportive opening
Describe a noticed change, express concern and invite the person to speak without pressure or judgement.
3. Identify an appropriate support route
For this case, consider a qualified healthcare professional, student support service or relevant safeguarding contact. Do not invent local contact details.
4. Explain urgency and boundaries
What would require immediate help? Explain why a teammate should not diagnose or promise absolute secrecy about a safety concern.
